An Evening of SQL Server Talk with James Rowland-Jones, SQL Server MVP

James is a SQL Server Consultant for SQLKnowHow and has worked for some of the world's largest institutions on OLTP and BI/DW.

He's a SQLBits speaker and part of the organising committee, which is where we've had the pleasure of seeing his presentations in the past.

We're delighted that James is coming to Bristol to deliver a talk on The Art of War-Fast Track Data Warehouse and Fragmentation. We will learn all about fragmentation from the inside out.

James will take us back to brass tacks so we can understand how SQL Server handles heaps and clustered indexes, re-visit page allocation and then apply this knowledge to our understanding of fragmentation.

He will conclude by looking at some design patterns to help minimise the impact of fragmentation on our data warehousing projects.

Key topics that James will cover:

- Logical, extent and file fragmentation
- Heap and clustered index architecture and internals
- Page allocation - how it works and how to influence it
- Trace flags that help avoid fragmentation
- Fragmentation in action
- Design patterns for minimal fragmentation
